One would think that an automaker would ride out a teaser image for as long as they could before unveiling the vehicle behind it, but it doesn’t seem as though there was nearly enough buzz about Infiniti’s new concept car to warrant the long wait. Scheduled to appear at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show in March, the Infiniti Etherea concept (and not Etheria as it was rumored) is a compact luxury model that previews Infiniti’s future entry-level model geared towards the younger population.
"ETHEREA is about a new type of luxury for younger buyers," said Toru Saito, Corporate Vice President and Leader of the Global Infiniti Business Unit. "It is not just a smaller version of a typically conservative and traditional luxury car."
The concept is 4.4 meters long and combines the elements of a coupe, a sedan, a hatchback, and even a crossover in one highly confused vehicle. And here people thought the Panamera didn’t know its sporty head from its sedan ass. Now we have an entry-level car that has a serious multiple personality problem, aimed at younger buyers who, apparently in Infiniti’s opinion, can’t decide what kind of car they want to buy. But the good news is said to be hidden in the high-tech new interpretations of traditional Japanese materials and finishes that Infiniti says will be used in the new concept, plus the design cues set to make their mark on future production models ? including the highly distinctive crescent-shaped C-pillar first seen on the Essence concept.
We’re not exactly sold on this concept just yet, but we’ll save our judgment on the Infiniti Etherea until we hear its official details at the Geneva Motor Show on March 1st, 2011.
